Red Bull that is. Having supported the MetroStars since 1996, I’ve amassed a closet full of jerseys, t-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets. Should my mom make a quilt for my son from them? Not sure and still in shock from the sudden acquisition of the Metros by Red Bull.
If they go on and win the MLS Cup, would I feel as good? I doubt it. They wouldn’t have won it as the MetroStars. And after 10 years of suffering, I was always assuring myself that the victory would be sweeter because of the suffering.
Will Dempsey put the forefingers on this head and charge after scoring? What will the chants be like?
But at the end of the day, I loved the MetroStars because I love soccer. And if the Red Bulls are playing it, at the highest level here in the US, then they’ll be the team I’ll go an watch. Will I start swigging the stuff like Alexi does here... I doubt it.
What I am happy about is that Mo will stay on as coach and Alexi will continue to be the GM. I was looking forward to this season more then any other, due mostly to what seemed to be a new attitude by the team. If they’re wearing a new jersey, I don’t think it’ll matter much. Most of the players haven’t been MetroStars for more then a season.
Without any doubt, Red Bull will spend money on advertising, which has been non-existent here, except for the red plastic derby hats a while back which were supposed to suddenly start a fashion trend in the New York area. So this is certainly great for soccer in the New York area as well as the league.
For now, there’s a movement to preserve the Metros past by the loyal fans and refer to the new team as the Reds. You can read more about that here. That sounds like an idea that may stick among the current fan base.
At the end of the day, it will take a while for me to get used to it, but I will. My kids will certainly prefer a stuffed red bull toy over one of a bad mutation of a panda and dog.
Bottom line is that I’ll still be watching the games with a bunch of idiots.
