don't the nj politicos have anything better to do...

this looks like its turning into the cuban missile crisis.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=361322&cc=5901

more quotable gems:

"Their new name may be Red Bull New York, but striking New Jersey from their name seems to be a different kind of bull altogether," said Brendan Gilfillan, a spokesman for Gov. Jon S. Corzine. "This is a team that sells its products in New Jersey, draws its fan base from New Jersey and receives funding from New Jersey."

"Certainly you can ask your team's president and general manager, Alexi Lalas, himself a graduate of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, about the importance of 'Jersey Pride,'" Lautenberg wrote

"They will not play in our stadium unless they have New Jersey in their name," he (zoffinger)said.

which is it people...are you offended by the inclusion of new york or the exclusion of new jersey.  earlier, zoff said new york can't be in it.  now nj must be in the name?

tell you what, if a team is willing to shell out 100 million dollars, they can call the team whatever they want.  where the hell were these politicians when the metros were trying to build a stadium.

truly unbelievable that they can't even realize that the irony of the jets and giants with new york prominently on their helmets....they say its different....they were new york for so long....but the giants have been playing there for 30 years...at what point do they become a nj team?  don't upset the giants guys.

hey..there's a soccer team...lets push them around.  hopefull they get the horns.

find something better to whine about.....

my prediction:

Red Bulls

or

New York Red Bulls of New Jersey.

all until they get the F out of giants stadium and into their own stadium.

my favorite part of the article is they want to introduce legislation...what are all the ny bagel, ny deli, and other stores that bear the ny name?

that's because ny is the biggest city in the world...and commercial enterprises like to take advantage of it....  nj, looks like the jealous neighbor...  sometimes, your neighbor's going to have a nicer car, bigger house, hotter wife.... that's life....no need to complain about it....

crazy!

Jersey gave the Jets and Giants a sweet heart deal to build a new stadium in the meadowlands. Why aren't they complaining about NY in their name?!?

Metros/RBNY pay Giants a fortune to rent out the place. In fact, NJSEA has made a profit off of the MetroStars and helped cause significate losses to the team because of how much they charge the team. Who are they to tell the team what they can call themselves?

They are just pissed they aren't involved in the new stadium RBNY and AEG is spending a fortune of their own money to build.

I'm sure the ventune will take away concerts and events NJSEA hoped to have.

jerks.

Found an article with some related info: http://tinyurl.com/ha3ax

great quote from Red Bull:
Ellie Applen, spokeswoman for Red Bull Communications, which is based in Santa Monica, Calif., said the franchise -- now owned by Red Bull, an Austrian beverage company -- was following the "tradition" of the Jets and Giants.

and additional info:
[By] the 1990s, the sports authority had ruled that any sports franchise that wanted to play at the Meadowlands Sports Complex had to have "New Jersey" in its name.

"They only have a lease at Giants Stadium that goes through this year, and a new lease isn't done yet," [George] Zoffinger [New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority president] said. "They're not playing in this stadium [in 2007] with that name."

Harrison doesn't care! yay!

"Officials in Red Bull New York's planned home appear so eager for the stadium project to move ahead they won't let the team name stand in the way

"It's not an issue at all for us," said Peter Higgins, director of the Harrison Redevelopment Agency. "

This grandstanding by Zoffinger and others in New Jersey politics is totally unacceptable until they go after the Jets and Giants in the same manner.  I may not like the name that much, but since this nonsense came out in the papers I've been more outraged at those that feel that New Jersey needs to be added to the name than those that stole the Metrostars from us.

VENTING is healthy:

To: bspigner@njsea.com (Director of Communications & External Affairs
NJSEA)

Dear Mr. Spigner,

I have read comments by President George Zoffinger that have questioned why Red Bull didn't include New Jersey in the team's name when they recently bought and renamed the former New York/New Jersey MetroStars.  I find Mr. Zoffinger's criticism to be rather surprising since the NJSEA has done very little in the last 10 years to help the former MetroStars owners increase fan interest in the team.  If the NJSEA wanted to be treated with respect they should have shown more respect to the former owners of the MetroStars.  Also, if the NJSEA is serious about Red Bull including New Jersey in the team's name why don't they require the Jets and Giants to do the same.  This is a double standard.
