First Row Idiots Drinking, but not Driving at Giants Stadium, April 25, 2004

Rainy and Red Saturday

Few could have predicted before the day was over that the First Row Idiots would be forced to spend a majority of tailgating time in their cars and two Idiots would see red cards from Giants Stadium Security. Saturday's game versus New England was a disappointing 1-1 tie. The game marked the debut Argentine-Colombian forward Sergio Galvan Rey for the MetroStars. Galvan Rey's nickname is the "King of Goals".

The game marked the debut Argentine-Colombian forward Sergio Galvan Rey for the MetroStars. Galvan Rey's nickname in Columbia was the "King of Goals". His debut wasn't overly impressive, but his nickname is a clear sign that we should expect many, many, many goals and outstanding performances from this new Metro throughout the year. How could he possibly let us down?

The second home game of the season saw a small drop in attendance, but Brian, Drew, Greg, Joey, Keith, Ofer, Paul and Ronen were on hand for a cold and wet tailgate and game. The group lucked out for a little bit and was able to cook some burgers and play some soccer in between rain showers. While it rained, the Idiots enjoyed drinking beers inside our cars (or in Joey's case: catch up on some sleep). A brilliant suggestion from one of the Idiots allowed us to communicate with each other as we stayed dry in the cars via speakerphones on our cell phones. On a geek scale, the idea rated pretty high.

The rain discouraged Keith from bring his camera into the stadium, so sadly game shots are missing from our photo gallery. The lack of camera also prevented us from capturing a moment that made the day forever be known as "Red Card Saturday 2004".

In an incident that every Idiot will learn from and never forget, Giant Stadium Security arrested Brian and Greg for "inappropriate behavior" shortly before the end of the first half. According to security, Brian and Greg both rained beer down on the field in the direction of New England player Jay Heaps. Why anyone would believe any of the Idiots would waste beer in such a manner is troubling and confusing. We here at firstrowidiots.com know the true story, but our legal department has advised us not to get into too much detail. The incident resulted in the removal of both Idiots from the first row. The New England fans in attendance let Brian know how they felt about the incident as he was carted off to a holding cell in the stadium; Greg let his displeasure towards the Giants Stadium Security be known in an exchange of "friendly gestures" as he was escorted away.

Brian and Greg both have court dates in early June and are no longer allowed to attend events at Giants Stadium. They can and are expected to appeal their suspension. Let’s hope they return soon because their presence will be missed. Future tailgating events until their return will no doubt involve a ceremonial spilling out of a little beer in their memory (but of course not on to the field in Giants Stadium).
